Garden & Landscape
Being the first official weekend of spring, my mind has been on what to do with my landscaping. This will be a first for me, since I have never been a homeowner before now. I have zero experience with anything relating to landscaping, so I am quite thankful that I have my mother-in-law to guide me in my expedition.
The front of the house has these wimpy little shrubs that have been over-trimmed thanks to the guys who put up our siding last year. Those will go bye-bye and I’m thinking of putting in some tall grasses. I always like the looks of those when the wind is blowing. I think I’ll find some place to put a couple of hostas too since those are easy and simple.
I’m going to attempt my first garden this year as well. Nothing too extravagant, just some tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, maybe some herbs and lettuces. Since I am expecting my second baby in June, I need my plants to be easy and low-maintenance. My MIL suggested building an elevated garden plot. I love the idea since we are surrounded by fields (which this year will be soy beans) and my husband’s family farms it. They spray pesticides a couple of times during the growing season, but I’m concerned with those leaching into my garden soil.
Also, with the elevated plot, I can easily put up chicken wire to keep out the bunnies. The support posts for the wire will allow me to drape a tarp over the plants on the spray days. All around, a good idea to me.
I live in central Michigan, so if any of you are familiar with growing in this region, I’d love to hear any advice or suggestions you have. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Until next time…
