Melanie Turner, Senior Project Manager for a sustainable digital print & copy centerStarting at the age of just 17, I began my career in the print and copy industry with a part-time job at Mail Boxes Etc.  Since then, I graduated high school, went to a Big Ten university where I got my Associate’s Degree in Hospitality Tourism Management, moved from Indiana to Colorado and back to Michigan.  All along the way, it seems I have been destined to work in the printing industry even though my schooling and degree should have pointed me elsewhere.

While attending college, I worked part-time at the local Student Union copy center and spent my summers working full-time at the University Printing Services.  After graduating, instead of pursuing a career related to my degree, I applied to FedEx Kinko’s where I worked as a Senior Project Coordinator for over a year.  I was then recruited by a local competitor to manage larger accounts and projects.  I have remained with this company for over 3 and a half years working remotely from home via phone, fax and email.

My current employer just recently took the steps to become a sustainable company in the print/copy industry.  Going through that process and the changes we have made together have inspired me to research this subject in more detail.  I want to explore what other companies are doing, trends in the customers’ demands in relation to ecologically-sound practices and new advances in “greener” technology and supplies.  This blog is a spot where I will post what I find in my quest to expand my knowledge of sustainable printing.

    Hello Melanie,

Let me first wish you a happy birthday!

I then want to apologize for getting in touch that way, but I couldn’t find on your blog any direct contact.

I just wanted to let you know that I work on behalf of Recycle Now on a campaign highlighting the need for recycling old electricals. It could be particularly relevant for your site as it is supported by a fun animation video featuring a printer!

Do please let me know if you’d like the details (I can’t drop any link in a contact form as it wouldn’t get through your spam filter).

Thanks for your time and enjoy your day!

    Hi Melanie,

I thought I should share some new and exciting info about the latest rage in offset printing.

As you know printing can only be so “green”. Printing presses still use chemicals, petroleum, have VOC emissions, etc. My company Zenith Color Communication Group, is the only printing company in NYC to own a new, state of the art, revolutionary, environmentally responsible, offset printing press. The press is made by Presstek. There are no VOC emissions, no plates to hang or dispose of (they are on rolls), no chemistry is used, no water is used, uses soy based inks, a lot less paper is needed for set ups, art is imaged directly on the press so registration is dead on. Plus, you can print a resolution of 300 line screen on stocks as heavy as 24 pt. It’s faster, higher quality and cost effective.

The press is incredible. Check us out. www.zenithcolorgroup.com

    Hi,

I wondered if you would be interested in exchanging links with The Green Providers Directory

We are a not-for-profit, green directory founded on ethical principles, providing links to renewable energy suppliers, organic health and beauty products, fair trade clothing, gifts and household goods and services. We also provide news and updates on the environment, recycling, energy efficiency and related topics.

We are listed in The Guardian and Channel 4’s environmental sections and on green.tv, a United Nations Environmental Programme, and we are members of Ethical Junction.

Please let me know if this would be of interest.

    Kind regards,

    Dr Gary Robertshaw
