How to Find a Sustainable Printer

Published by mkissing

I recently wrapped up my 10 Ways to Find a Sustainable Printer series, so I thought I’d make it easy for you to find the posts by creating this page.  The purpose of this series was to help you as a print buyer find a commercial printer whose core values are rooted in environmentally responsible practices.

1)  Recycled Stock Options - Finding a sustainable printer begins with knowing what recycled papers are readily available.

2)  Inks - Because the inks used in printing can be one of the major sources of VOC emissions, discovering what inks your printer uses can help you determine how environmentally friendly your printer is.

3)  Recycling and Waste Management - Unfortunately, in the print industry, waste just comes with the territory.  Whether it’s setting up the press and wasting sheets before the colors are just right or trimming sheets to size, waste is a necessary evil.  How does your printer manage its waste and how thoroughly are they recycling?

4)  Internal Green Practices - There are plenty of other internal practices your printer can have in place besides recycling that makes them more sustainable.  Ask about what other efforts they are making.

5)  Staff Knowledge - A truly sustainable printer’s entire staff, from sales and marketing to production and operations, should be knowledgeable on the best eco-options for your print project.

6)  Reduction - The most important step towards sustainability is reduction.  From supplies to energy, your printer should be conscious about reducing their environmental impact.

7)  Technology and Equipment - There are constant improvements in greener technology and equipment for the printing industry.  Knowing what your printer is working with will help you determine how eco-friendly they are.

8)  Community Involvement - How involved your printer is with their local community can be a great indicator of their sustainability commitment.

9)  Certifications - Is your printer FSC or SFI certified?  If not, why not?  What other green certifications or awards do they hold?

10)  Other Efforts - What other ways is your printer working towards sustainability?
